Week two: June 24 - June 30
The second week of being abroad was insane! I was still on the high of coming back from Switzerland, we got into our classroom groove, and everyone was basking in the Roman sun.
Here's a brief run down of what occurred that second week:
I got to go to Aperitivo with my Italian class, essentially happy hour with snacks, and I practiced speaking like a local
For my Mafia class, we took a trip to the DIA which is essentially the FBI for mafia. I saw keys get made, surveillance equipment, and scenes from Godfather 1 and 2 that correlate to real mafia mentality.
We went to the Colosseum and took a bunch of super cute pictures and learned some of the history
I realized I only hate tea in America and fell in love with peach tea
We rode bikes through Villa Borghese for our Italian class and got to see the most amazing skyline. It was all fun and games until we had to ride uphill.
We made pasta from scratch one night and it was such a cool experience. We beat the egg whites, rolled and cut the dough and all. We also made tiramisu from scratch and it did not turn out too great, but it was fun to do.
I tried Greek food for the first time- a vegetarian pita, spanakopita, and baklava. It tasted even better than McDonald's (and definitely the Italian food).
I got even closer to Sabria because we stayed in one night and played games
Sabria and I went bopping and shopping around town for souvenirs
We went to Vatican City and saw Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and we went inside of St. Peter's Basilica (tip: buy a pretty dress that covers your shoulders and your knees! most churches have a strictly enforced dress code!)
I also tried something called a panzerotti (tip: try them! they are really good, especially the ones with marinara sauce and cheese)
I had a spiritual revelation
All of the girls took a trip to a flea market across town and we ate the best pizza in all of Italy
Author's note: week two was kind of laid back and relaxing because we were all still finding our bearings, but it was still a lot of fun. I spent a lot of time thinking and reflecting that week and I am a much better woman now because of it. If you know you know.
Until next time, Ciao.
